Female-associated signs sit low (chin, jaw); male-associated signs sit high (forehead, temple). MOTHER and FATHER are the same handshape moved between the two — the clearest minimal pair in ASL.
Etymology as a memory hook
GIRL traces a bonnet's drawstring along the jaw. Once you see the ribbon, you never forget where the sign goes.

Draw the thumb of an 'A' hand down along your jawline.
At the forehead, open and close a flattened hand at the brim-line, as if tipping the peak of a cap.
Cradle one forearm over the other and rock them gently side to side.
